Hello!
My name is Nick Stewart and I am a photographer and journalist from Reno, Nevada. I am on track to graduate with a B.A. in journalism at the University of Nevada, Reno in May 2026.
I’ve had a lifelong interest in railroads, and my passion for photography began at a young age. While in high school, I discovered a love for storytelling through writing and audio, working as a reporter for KUNR Public Radio in Reno from 2021 to 2025. There, I learned how to report and produce stories for broadcast. Over the last few years, I have invested more time in learning how to tell stories without words — through photos!
In my freshman year of college, I won a Hearst Award in the audio category for a story I did on the impacts of inflation on a local food bank. In my sophomore year, I joined the student newspaper The Nevada Sagebrush at UNR and served as both assistant news editor and photo editor from 2023 to 2025.
In 2025 I became involved in railroad preservation when I moved to Ely, Nevada to intern for the Nevada Northern Railway in their archive department for the summer.
At the same time, I became interested in publishing my railroad work and got my first photos published in Railfan & Railroad Magazine. In 2026, I’ve now won a Hearst Award in the photo category for my coverage of the National Gay Rodeo Finals in Reno.
Currently, I am working for The Nevada Independent as a photographer and I am constantly taking on exciting photo projects. My work has been published in the Associated Press, NPR, and Teen Vogue. Even though I am back in Reno now, I am also still working with the Nevada Northern Railway remotely and helping out whenever I can.
